Backs are notorious for causing problems and being injured. According to recent studies, 80% of people report back problems. Some of this pain can be prevented and managed through the use of tools like back braces.

Back braces bind together the lower back muscles and provide additional mechanical support for the back by simply wrapping around the waist. For some people with back pain, these braces can be a great way to alleviate some of the pressure. They can also act as a preventative measure if you wear them while lifting heavy objects or performing labor intensive work. A lot of people choose to do this as to avoid “throwing out” their backs and causing more problems, but a lot of people start using them too late.

Unfortunately, although they can be a great help in relieving back pain, they are not a long-term solution. We do not recommend that you wear a brace all the time. They just aren’t a permanent solution. They are not able to deal with the source of the pain as physiotherapy can.

Sometimes, we use braces for immediate relief or in combination with physiotherapy, so definitely ask about the use of a brace when you come in for your consultation appointment! Back braces are also good for specific instances when you need some extra support. For example, when you want to lift something heavy or are having a particularly bad back day.

Physio Health offers several different types of back braces that we prescribe based off of the patient’s needs. We will help you find the one that works the best for you, and we can also get you started on some long-term treatments for your back pain as well if that’s something you are interested in.
